Don Hilton is a native of Long Island, New York. He played high school lacrosse at St. Dominic’s in Oyster Bay, New York. During his collegiate career, Hilton was a midfielder for Albright College and NYIT.Hhe played LSM for the New York Lacrosse Club in the American Lacrosse League and continues to particiapte in Men's lacrosse as a player and a coach.. At Florida State, Hilton coordinated the defense and worked with the goalies as a member of FSU's famed coach Bill Harkins.
Lacrosse Hall of Fame Coach Jack Kaley remembers Hilton well from his time at NYIT. “Donald was a valuable team member of the 2004 championship team,” said Kaley. “Don learned first-hand what it takes to be a champion. As a player, he learned the fundamentals and work ethic to be a champion. As a coach, he learned the techniques of the game and the practice tempo needed to develop a successful program.”
Long Island Storm President Frank V. Sammartano stated that Don relates to his players in a positive way and is very supporting to them. He can get his point across to his players [and] truly cares for his players’ wellbeing. Being a teacher, he is also very interested in the players’ schooling. He is constantly asking them about their studies. He is a person I would recommend to coach at any level.”
Hilton has extensive coaching experience, and has coached everything from youth lacrosse to high school and Elite Select tournament teams. Rich Aquino, founder of the Seaford Lacrosse Club for lacrosse players from Pre-Kindergarten through High School, was full of praise for Hilton’s work as a coach. “In these past years, all of us—the Board, the parents, the kids—have enjoyed a terrific relationship with Coach Hilton. He’s demonstrated quite a unique way of relating to the teams and he frequently coaches the boys on the nuances of the sport, the importance of good sportsmanship, and about how to properly conduct themselves as maturing young men.”
Florida State Head Coach Bill Harkins was excited when Don joined his staff. “Don was my first choice as defensive coordinator,” said Harkins, “He has a great lacrosse pedigree and having played for Coach Kaley of NYIT was a real bonus. I have had the privilege of coaching under Coach Kaley and I consider him one of the best the game has ever produced, and Don brought that wealth of knowledge he learned with him to FSU.
